Baking with Babes!

October 14th, 2009

Now THAT title has you wondering what I’m up to, doesn’t it?!  The littlest love of my life just turned 7.  He has always been the one interested in baking or helping in the kitchen.  He began stirring homemade biscuits (one of his favorite foods) before he was 3 and cracked his first egg shortly after.  He has always wanted to be right by my side and see everything I cook and bake while his sisters just enjoyed eating the fruits of my labor.

In their defense, the girls can cook but I don’t think I had as much patience when they were little.  I amwas …<sigh> am completely anal retentive, especially when it comes to my kitchen, always cleaning up behind them.  They were probably afraid to help and mess something up.  They heard the words, “GET THAT OUT OF MY KITCHEN!” a little too often I’m afraid but I digress.

The first day of Fall Break left my son bored and lonely.  He LOVES school because he loves to have other kids around to talk to and play with.  I am pretty boring to a 7yr old.  He asked if we could bake something and I looked into those big puppy dog eyes and melted into a pile of ooze.  How could I possibly resist?

Who could resist this face?!

His favorite food is chocolate.  It’s funny because he is an extremely picky eater.  He won’t eat chocolate if it has nuts or nougat or caramel.  He asks for Doves like other kids ask for money. He takes after his daddy because I do NOT like chocolate and they both prefer dark chocolate over milk chocolate-double ugh for me.  I asked if he wanted to make chocolate chip cookies and he suggested dark chocolate cookies with chocolate chips.  Hmmm.  At least I wouldn’t be tempted to eat them!

I told Garret how much of every ingredient to put in and he obliged.  The only thing we didn’t measure was the chocolate chips.  For my boys, there is no such thing as too much chocolate or too many chocolate chips.  I will admit that I made the recipe up in my head but was forced to jot it down later as I saw my husband’s eyes roll in the back of his head after his first bite.  The family claimed they are the best cookies ever made and I am the best mom and wife in the world.

They might be right. ;)
